Earlier, when I started these posts about our purposes as Christians and a church, I mentioned the great commission at the introduction. Well, we have come to that part!
What is the Great Commission?
“Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” – Matthew 28:19-20
The Great Commission involves:
(a) Preaching the gospel and leading souls to Christ
(b) Teaching those who have been saved and converted to become soul-winners themselves
Brethren, our 3rd purpose as a church is:
We are called to GO and spread the good news of the love of Christ. Emphasis on the word “GO”. Many Christians today fail to go, they refuse to go fishing for men for Christ; which is what we have been commanded to do! Every born-again believer has a responsibility to spread the GOSPEL!
What is the gospel?
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” – I Corinthians 15:1-4
The gospel we are to share is that of the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus. We are to communicate His love for and to the world. Oh how He loves us! Enough to die so that we may live eternally, and He is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
When a saved person has been baptised, it means the person is identifying with the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. Baptism is and outward or physical manifestation of a decision taken to become a part of Christ and to go His way.
As disciples and ambassadors of Christ, we have been called upon to seek God’s will. He doesn’t want sinners to die and perish. Plenty people walk past you in your offices, homes, schools… walking in the way which is not God’s! Your duty as a Christian is to help them see that Christ – the Way, the Truth and the Life – is the only way they must pursue!
We must be promoters, broadcasters, advertisers, marketers and diplomats of Christ, protecting His interests, serving His will – telling people of His kingdom and what it takes to become a part of it. You must preach, not just by your words, but also by your lifestyle! Many do not read the Bible anymore, they read people; let your lifestyle also promote Christ!
If you claim you love God, then you need to spread that love and speak of it to others. We need to win more souls for Christ, for whoever is not saved is not safe!
Every believer who fails to spread the gospel of Christ is a fake ambassador and a disgrace to the Kingdom he claims he represents. There is so much darkness and hate in the world, we need to spread God’s light and love within us to other people. We must become an extension of God’s hand and reach out to people who are spiritually and physically dying and who need help. Do not just be a believer, be a gospeller too!
Let me end with this saying:
“Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you are not saved yourself. Be sure of that.” – Charles Haddon Spurgeon
