As we move on to the sixth formula for godly success, let us not forget that God’s plan for us is to succeed and prosper. Today we are looking at EXCELLENCE – the common factor between Joseph, Daniel, Joshua and Caleb.

Gen. 41: 38 – 41 – “And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom the spirit of God is? And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath showed thee all of this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou: thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.”

Num. 13: 30 – 31 – “And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, we are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”

Num. 14: 6 – 9, 24, 30 – “And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes: and they spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it unto us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not against Jehovah, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is removed from over them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not… but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it… surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.”

Dan. 2: 46 – 49 – “Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odors unto him. The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou hast been able to reveal this secret. Then the king made Daniel great, and gave him many great gifts, and made him to rule over the whole province of Babylon, and to be chief governor over all the wise men of Babylon.  And Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel was in the gate of the king.”

Dan. 6: 1 – 3 – “It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom; and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one; that these satraps might give account unto them, and that the king should have no damage. Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an EXCELLENT SPIRIT was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

What distinguished Joseph, Daniel, Joshua and Caleb was an EXCELLENT SPIRIT! All four men were problem-solvers, and this is what it means to have the spirit of excellence!

Excellence means to exceed a given standard that is ordinary; the enemy of excellence is average! If you desire to stand out, you must decide not to be average! Excellence means to be exceptional, matchless, superior, superb, deserving, splendid, fantastic and mind-blowing! To be excellent is to be superior in quality, greater in quantity; to transcend your job description and to outdo yourself each time!

Excellence does not compare or compete with others; it competes with oneself and aims at outdoing yourself every time you do something new! To compare or compete with others puts you at a risk of becoming tired and fizzling out!

Quality does not happen by chance; it is always a result of high intention – it must be something you are going and gunning for! And to aim and intend for quality is to give great attention to details – this makes you an excellent person – it allows you to not just do the job, but finish it well! An excellent person does not just make a sales pitch, he meets his customer’s needs and he adds value!

An excellent person is greater in quantity – he’s expected to do one, but he does three! Do not stop where they asked you to stop, DO MORE!

Anyone who has the spirit of excellence has the following:

AN EXTRAORDINARY SPIRIT: Such person is known by others to have a positive attitude, always bringing a fresh perspective and idea to the table. It does not matter if the whole thing is crumbling; the person with the extraordinary spirit gives and brings hope to the problem.

Joseph brought a positive attitude with him everywhere – in his father’s house, in Potiphar’s house, in the prison and before Pharaoh! He was not the first slave or the first prisoner, but because of his positive perspective, he stayed on top of his problems! What kind of perspective do you bring to your problems?

Joshua and Caleb brought hope to the people even when everyone else thought their situation was hopeless!

THE SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT: Such person is known to always increase in knowledge; he brings wise counsel, clear and deep perception and understanding to the table! He constantly increases in the knowledge of what he is doing!

THE SPIRIT OF INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS, SIGNS, THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS: Such person discerns what God is saying in whatever situation that arises; and help bring direction and confidence to others!

A GIFT OF EXPLANATION OF ENIGMAS: Such person makes difficult and complex issues simple and comprehensible. What baffles others beyond understanding; he breaks it down and makes it explainable.

THE GIFT OF PROBLEM-SOLVING: People with this gift solve problems in ways that everyone benefits and each person feels valued. Others like to bring their problems to them, because they will leave with a solution without either party feeling devalued! Every leader should pray for this gift; because complicated issues will come your way all the time as one who leads, and the ability to resolve the difficulty distinguishes you as an excellent leader – whether in your home, ministry, at your job or anywhere you find yourself!

AN EXCELLENT SPIRIT, according to ISAIAH 11: 1, 2

“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: and the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.”

The spirit of excellence is the spirit of the Lord (which includes the spirits of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and the fear of the Lord). The spirit of God is the spirit of excellence; it was the spirit of God that was in Joshua, Caleb, Joseph and Daniel!

Paul describes the kind of spirit God gave us in II Tim. 1: 7 – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” God already instilled in us the spirit of excellence; He filled us with the spirit to do extraordinary things – it is our jobs to go out there to display this superior quality, in everything that we do! Run your own race excellently, complement where you should complement; do not compete with your peers, colleagues or spouse! In your marriage, forgive quickly and aim to be the first to take steps towards a positive direction!

Outdo yourself; don’t be satisfied with your past glory! Your greatest enemy is yesterday’s success; aim to do better because yesterday’s success is not celebrated today!

Improve in whatever you do! When people think you have gotten to your limit, show them there is more! Aim for unbeatable records! Make yourself your concern, not others!

Pursue excellence intentionally, it is already inside of you – this spirit of God; work and run with it in all you do!

I pray with you today, God will stir up the spirit of excellence inside of you in the name of Jesus! AMEN.
